as noted in the preceding album, the reason for our road trip to the cincinnati area was the first annual proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) meet-up. the PFFD group we belong to has over 200 members, and one of them, a mother whose 10-year-old daughter had never until yesterday met other PFFDers like herself, organized an amazing picnic in the park. she had covered all her bases. she secured food, music (DJ), entertainment (fire truck, magician) and gifts (swag bags with disposable cameras, candy, toys, etc.), almost exclusively through donations. she even had t-shirts made for all family members! there were 8 PFFDers there, mostly with their families (one, a college student, came on her own), and one thing that has come up in the post-game coverage of the event is how nice it was to be among folks who didn’t stare at their kids. in fact, any attention simon got was either directed at his very cool prosthesis (a couple parents, admiring his knee in particular, took photos to bring back to their kids’ prosthetists) or just at how well he walks (and runs and jumps) despite having only had his leg a few months now. anyhow, it was a lovely afternoon and many thanks go out to the mom who arranged it all.
